Our History

Coming from humble beginnings, Jack Charlton, in the early 1960’s, was manufacturing and selling handmade rod, side cast reels and tackle to family, friends and work colleagues from his family home in Bundamba Ipswich Queensland.

Jack was doing this as a hobby while working in the RAAF at Amberely Airbase and later on Railway Workshops at North Ipswich. Jacks’ hobby was so successful that in 1967. Jack decided to take his hobby on full time and move to a more visual location on the Highway at Riverview operating his newly opened Tackle shop in the front room and verandah of his newly purchased home.

In 1975 Jack’s Son Brian returning from the mines in Central Queensland and purchased Charlton’s Bait and Tackle off his parents and moved it on to another bigger location to his modified house a few minutes away to Brisbane Rd at Redbank, operating 24 hours a day, adding more brands, Bait and Ice to the list of items sold.

Again, the business outgrew this location after a few years. Brian purchased an old Golden Fleece service station at Riverview at the merge of the Warrego Highway and converted it to house His Fishing store and Changing a few words in the name around to Charlton’s Tackle n Bait. This location was closed after a few years by the Mains roads department to widen the now called Ipswich Motorway.

Brian sort after another location with good visibility and in 1987 landed on the current location by the Ipswich motorway at Redbank building the first purpose-built Fishing Tackle shop in Australia.

Charlton’s Fishing as it’s now known has flourished and we are looking at expansion plans once again. Brian's son Craig now runs the Family Business, keeping the personal touch with avid anglers locally, Interstate and around the world.
